View of the market square with the Roland statue

The town hall has been acclaimed by UNESCO as an "outstanding representation of civic autonomy and sovereignty". A brick Gothic building, it was constructed between 1405 and 1410, with a Renaissance façade added in 1609-1612. Its 40 metre long council chamber is one of the most attractive banqueting halls in Germany and was once used as a courtroom.

Roland, a nephew of Charlemagne, has overseen fair trading in north Germany since the Middle Ages. The 5.55 metre high statue of Roland in Bremen was erected in 1404 to symbolise the city's independence and is listed as part of the world heritage together with the town hall.
