The market square has been the heart of this Hanseatic city for hundreds of years and must rank as one of the loveliest in Germany. It is lined with remarkable buildings such as the town hall, dating back over 600 years, impressive St. Peter's cathedral, the ultra-modern Bremen regional government building and the Schütting (guildhall), where the Bremen chamber of commerce meets.
To the west of the town hall stands a bronze sculpture of the Bremen Town Musicians by Gerhard Marcks (1889 - 1981). The donkey, the dog, the cat and the cockerel are characters from a fairytale by the Brothers Grimm and their statue marks the end of the German Fairytale Route which starts in Hanau, the birthplace of the Grimms.
In the Schnoor, Bremen's oldest quarter, little 15th and 16th century houses, now artists' studios, goldsmiths' workshops and art galleries, are crowded together in winding narrow streets and tiny squares. Small cafés and restaurants cater for the most refined palate.
The Bremen Universum® Science Center presents science as a thrilling adventure. Inside its spectacular silver building the wonders of the scientific world are brought to life using interactive exhibits in creatively designed display areas.
German Emigration Centre: History comes alive at the German Emigration Centre. This is the biggest interactive museum of its kind, showing how 7.2 million people, including 3.7 million Germans, emigrated from Bremerhaven between 1830 and 1974. An impressive exhibition allows visitors to relive the journey taken by the emigrants, from the waiting hall to the ship and onwards to Ellis Island and New York.
